Testing device ECE R 118 Appendix 7

In the test device, a test specimen is exposed in a horizontal position to a heat flow through an electric heater. A tray is placed under the specimen to collect droplets. Absorbent cotton is placed in this tray to determine if the droplets burn. The heat flux from the electric heater is measured at a distance of 30 mm above a heat flux sensor. This heat flux is set and controlled by a PID controller, and the PID controller can be set to a manual or automatic mode, providing a fixed voltage signal at the manipulated variable (heater) and no feedback from the manipulated variable (heat flux sensor) to the PID controller. The software senses the heat flux and regulates or controls the manipulated variable of the electric heater.
